The Grand Opening of the Christmas Season is an annual and traditional, merry event that starts the Christmas season in Rovaniemi. The event begins at 4 pm at the central square of Santa Claus Village. In Rovaniemi, Christmas is every day, but the opening ceremony reminds us of the Christmas’ message of goodwill, sharing and caring – all of the three main characters that Santa Claus stands for. To cherish the event’s message, the elves and local artists put on a festive concert that culminates in Santa Claus’ speech – what he got in store for us this year?

Grand Opening brings together Rovaniemi citizens and tourists to celebrate all things Christmas. It’s known for being a warm-hearted and welcoming event, that’s also a reason to visiting Rovaniemi for many. The evening is rounded off with dancing to Christmassy disco tunes.

The event is free of charge. The celebration is organized by Visit Rovaniemi.

Glass igloo is a little cabin with glass roof or glass dome to see the sky while beeing inside the cabin or lying on the bed. They are specially designed to provide panorama view, enjoy nature scenery, see the Northern Lights in winter, if lucky, or Midnight sun in summer.

Glass igloo usually has insulated thermal glass roof. They are electrically heated and keep warmth inside. Usually igloo is equipped with wc and shower. Budget options might have shared facilities. Luxury igloos have bathroom, kitchenette, sauna, outdoor heated jacuzzi.

3 glass igloo resorts are located in 130 km from Rovaniemi in Pyha-Luosto area next to the ski resorts and Natural Park: Pyhän Asteli Aurora Igloos & Suites, Santa's Hotel Aurora & Igloos, Pyhä Igloos.

Also 1 brand new glass igloo resort is situated in 90 km from Rovaniemi, next to Ranua Wildlife Park: Arctic Fox Igloos.

All those igloo hotels have stategic location at the latitude of the Arctic Circle to have the possibility to see the Northern Light. But in our opinion, the best location has Apukka Resort and Arctic Fox Igloos as those hotels are located by the lake and have better open panorama view of the sky and less light pollution.

Glass Resort and Santa's Igloos Arctic Circle are located within walking distance from Santa Claus village. Both are luxury variety of glass accommodation. Best suits for short Lapland gateway as all activities and attractions can be found on spot.
GLASS IGLOO PRICES IN ROVANIEMI

Avarage glass igloo price in Rovaniemi area during snow season is around 350€-550€ per night.

During Christmas and New Year season prices go up to 770€-990€ per night. While during summer months great igloo deals can be found for the price around 150€ per night (Arctic Fox Igloos for example). It is not possible to see the Northern Light suring summer, but Midnight Sun experience will be extraordinary.

Please note that glass igloo price is more about the experience, not accommodation itself.
NORTHERN LIGHTS FROM GLASS IGLOO

Overnight stay or even few days holidays in glass igloo hotel does not guarantee that you'll see the Northern Lights. It just gives you a special Lapland experience and comfort to chase the Aurora and try your luck.

Majority glass igloo hotels in Rovaniemi area have Aurora alarm service to inform guests about maximum Solar activity and best chanses to see the Aurora if weather permits.

Pay attantion to the location of the igloo resort. Places top of the hill or by the lake are definitely better.
ACTIVITIES IN ROVANIEMI ARE THE AREA

Rovaniemi is one of the best Lapland destination in Finland. It is easy to get to thanks to Rovaniemi international airport with seasonal direct flights from some of the EU countries. Santa Claus village and SantaPark theme park are the main attraction for families with kids.

Full range of Lapland activities can be orginized there in Rovaniemi: reindeer rides and visiting reindeer farm; husky safaris, snowmobile safaris, evening Aurora safaris, ice fishing, snow trips, etc.

There is also an unique opportunity to see the Northern Lights from a flight in Rovaniemi. Daily flights between 1.12 – 31.03 if clouds block the sky, but Solar activity promising.
